A WONDERFUL RIDE (2023)

Five years ago, 23-year-old girl Pan Meihao decided to move from a small town in Henan Province to the capital city Beijing to make a living despite her parents’ strong opposition. Their worry didn’t come from nowhere. Meihao was a disabled girl in a wheelchair from one year old. Five years later, she surprised her parents by finding a job and enjoying all different kinds of lives, including parachuting, all the way to the start-up of a company. China has 85 million disabled people, according to official statistics. Their stories have always been labelled as being suffering and marginalized. But Meihao’s story of making her way from a small town to a big city in a wheelchair not only tells an uplifting female empowerment story but gives us hope that even for disadvantaged individuals, there are opportunities to cherish their dreams in an inclusive and diverse society in China.
