The Hangzhou Stories Documentary Workshop, a collaborative effort between SDI and CNEX, represents a significant initiative in the realm of documentary filmmaking. This workshop is designed to highlight the diverse narratives of Hangzhou, offering both aspiring and established filmmakers an opportunity to explore and express the city's rich cultural and social landscapes through the medium of documentary.
The primary aim of the Hangzhou Stories Documentary Workshop is to foster creativity, encourage cultural exchange, and advance the craft of documentary storytelling. By providing a platform for filmmakers to delve into the unique stories of Hangzhou, the workshop seeks to contribute to the global documentary scene with fresh perspectives and innovative narratives.
As the Project Coordinator of the workshop, my responsibilities are integral to the smooth operation of the workshop. Tasked with bridging the communication between SDI, CNEX, and the workshop participants.
The workshop unfolds over 16 weeks, featuring a blend of online and offline activities designed to enrich the participants' documentary filmmaking skills. Key components of the program include:
- Instructional Zoom sessions led by industry experts, covering various aspects of documentary filmmaking from conceptualization to post-production.
- Case studies and panel discussions that provide insights into successful documentary projects.
- Opportunities for participants to work on their projects, receiving feedback and guidance from mentors.
This preparatory phase culminated in an intensive seven-day offline editing training held at the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art, beginning on November 27 2023. The workshop's main event, the screening of these five short films, was scheduled for December 3 2023, marking the culmination of the participants' hard work and dedication.
The films featured in the "Hangzhou Stories" workshop include:
Nomad Community (2023): Directed by Lan Yong and produced by Zhao Wen, this 10-minute film explores the desire of urban dwellers to return to rural life, juxtaposed with the forced movement of trees, highlighting the theme of societal mobility.
As You Fade Out (2023): A 7-minute film by director Liu Lingyingzhi and producer Cao Yuting, presenting a poetic exploration of time, space, and memory within the remnants of an open-world carnival, inviting viewers to reconsider the city's hidden layers and forgotten stories.
Implanting Memories (2023): This 15-minute documentary, directed by Gu Wenjia, Zhang Ting, and Pan Zishen, weaves a narrative that combines the director's mother's brief history in Hangzhou with contemporary life, employing both classic cinema techniques and modern AI-generated content to craft a nuanced "Hangzhou memory."
All Quiet On The Westlake (2023): Directed by Wei Zishuo with producer Ge Yao, this 15-minute piece tells the poignant story of a deaf-blind couple's life, exploring themes of love, communication, and the challenges faced by those left behind by Hangzhou's rapid development.
Brewing for Happiness (2023): A 19-minute film directed by Pang Yuhong, focusing on a couple's attempt to redefine success and happiness away from the bustling city life, seeking a new sense of control and fulfillment in an unfamiliar setting.
The screening event, held at the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art, was not just a showcase of these documentaries but also a platform for discussion and engagement with the student and faculty audience. This initiative underscores the workshop's commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of documentary filmmaking in China, as well as encouraging a dialogue around the stories and themes presented in the "Hangzhou Stories."
