Ubiquitous (2014)

Synopsis: Ubiquitous aims to follow the human and nonhuman brief to show how music affects the lives of people. We chose to analyze this by observationally including the stories of three individuals, a musician, a dancer, and an average music consumer. Each of these subjects are affected by music in different ways due to the personal relationship they have developed with music throughout their lives. To approach this concept we conducted interviews with each of the subjects to better gain an understanding of the influence music has on their lives. We then took this information and organized how we would film each section of their stories. The concept we wanted to follow was showing each subject in the place where they are in their most natural element when interacting with music. The musician we filmed at a live event and in a recording studio, the dancer we filmed at a dance competition, and the music consumer we filmed in the car, where he would listen to the radio, in his room, and at a live music event in a club. In contrast to showing the subjects in their “natural habitats”, we also included shots of them in a bright white studio to show them stripped out of their element creating a juxtaposition. To critically explore the documentary form we decided to attempt to make our film a cross between an observational and poetic documentary. The shots we gathered of our subjects in the areas where they naturally interact with music were purely observational with no interference from us, where the studio shots are an abstract representation of reality.

In this documentary, I was charing the role of Cameraman in a three people group, I was collaboration working with Shalini Moodley (Director and Sound Designer)and Shelby Silsky (Eidtor).

As a cameraman,I did all the camera shooting and placing all the lighting equipment. Our documentary really want to reflect that how people actually visualised the music, so I took lots of cutaways shooting done in the photographic  studio to make the documentary looked poetic.
